Posts are the whole story
Almost every fence fails at the same place: the post, at ground level, where moisture collects. Pickets and rails weather slowly and visibly. Posts rot from the inside out and look fine until the day the fence leans.
This matters for cost because resetting a post means digging out the old concrete footing, which is the labour-heavy part of any fence job. Replacing ten pickets is an hour. Resetting three posts is most of a day.
Rain, not storms
On the coast, fences fail slowly rather than suddenly. Winter rain keeps the ground wet around posts for months, which is why post rot — not wind — is the most common reason Vancouver fences lean. Winter windstorms tend to finish off posts that were already soft.

Common questions
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a fence?
Repair, until roughly a third of the posts are failing. Posts are the expensive part: replacing pickets on sound posts is cheap, and resetting posts one at a time costs more per post than doing a run all at once. If several posts are leaning, price both options.
Does homeowners insurance cover fence damage?
Storm and impact damage is often covered subject to your deductible; rot and age are not. Given typical deductibles and typical fence repair costs, many repairs fall below the deductible. Photograph the damage before anything is moved either way.
Who pays when it is a shared boundary fence?
It is usually a matter of agreement between neighbours, and it depends on where the fence actually sits relative to the property line. Before commissioning repair on a shared fence, talk to your neighbour and check your survey if there is any doubt. Strata properties may also have bylaws that apply. We quote the work; we cannot settle the boundary.
